Community Policing / School Resource Officer
Community Policing
This unit is made up of 3 officers, with a lieutenant who oversees the operations of the unit. Community Policing is a philosophy on community oriented policing that encompasses the entire department. Each officer is expected to conduct police work in the field using a community oriented policing concept. The unit operates on a more intense level, delivering education on a many levels to each area of the community.
Some of these major areas include
The officers within this unit work rotating shifts to provide coverage 7 days a week to the community. These unit officers, along with assigned patrol officers are often scheduled for many city and local agency events that are planned throughout the year in addition to their regular duties. They are involved in; Parades, Band concerts in monument park, Movie nights for kids, organized walks and 5K runs, and a number of state and local engagements that are organized throughout the year.
- Crime prevention education for residents in many areas of crime prevention strategies and concepts
- Crime/Fraud prevention for retail establishments that reduce theft and fraudulent crimes
- Elderly programs that offer safety techniques in all areas of life. (TRIAD/AARP programs)
- School Safety to each student from kindergarten to High School. (D.A.R.E.)
- Citizen Police Academy (10 week course on day to day police work)
- “Drug take back” programs (disposal of harmful prescription drugs).
- Drug and Alcohol initiatives in collaboration with several human services agencies.
- Administer traffic safety initiatives to target serious traffic offenses.
- Domestic violence training/prevention/ education programs.
- Housing complex patrols/ education/ services.
- Mountain Bike Patrols
- Motorcycle Patrols
